FAQs

How old do you need to be to learn to snorkel?

Whilst there is no official age from which people can learn to snorkel, we recommend children be both capable swimmers and comfortable in the ocean before they add a mask and snorkel into the mix.

Is the water cold?

Depending on the time of year, yes the ocean can be quite cold in Victoria. However if you wear the correct exposure protection then you will be fine. Choosing appropriate exposure protection is part of our Snorkeler course.

What can I expect to see snorkelling near Melbourne?

We’re blessed to have a wide variety of marine environments right at our doorstep here in Melbourne. Whether you’re after sandy dunes, seagrass meadows, rocky kelp covered reefs or cold-water coral & sponge gardens, you’ll find there’s an incredible diversity of terrains & species to be enjoyed.

Some of our common critter encounters include seahorses, weedy sea dragons, cuttlefish, blue ringed, maori, pale, gloomy & sand octopus, several species of stingray with the southern smooth ray being amongst one of the largest species in the world, Port Jackson sharks, cowfish, blue devil fish & schooling fish such as Australian salmon, pinky snapper & juvenile travally. Melbourne & the bay are home to three species of dolphins & Australian fur seals, whilst migrating whales drop by for a visit during winter months.

What kind of qualifications will I receive?

For some of the training we offer there are certifications available either through our RTO partnership or via PADI.

There is no official qualification for our Safety Snorkeler course, however you will receive both a certificate and a certification card which lists what you have learned and achieved.

Should PADI pick up the remainder of our curriculum, all our certs will then be retroactively upgraded.
